Basil W. Robinson was born in Boston on July 14, 1942, and passed away on March 23, 2018 after a long illness at Linda Manor in Leeds. He was the son of the late Basil W. and Elizabeth (Cadigan) Robinson of Nahant. He grew up in Nahant and attended school at St. Mary’s in Lynn. He earned a graduate degree from UMass Amherst in 1978, and was a professor at Holyoke Community College from 1978 until his retirement in 2002.
A resident of Southampton since 1975, he was a very active member of the community, serving on the school committee and as selectman in the 1980s. In retirement, he volunteered at the town library and the senior center, and in 2008 received the “Citizen of the Year” award.
He and his wife Mary traveled extensively both in the United States and Europe where he pursued his love of photography, documenting the many places they visited.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Mary (DeSando) Robinson; son, Michael and wife Kristin of Buckeye, Ariz.; daughter, Allison Duffy and husband Neal of Swampscott; and two grandsons, Shea and Jack Duffy. He also leaves his siblings, Stephen and wife Lana of Ocean Springs, Miss., Mary Wilson and husband Arthur of Venice, Fla., Peter and wife Carole of South Hampton, N.H., Julie Tarmy and husband Les of Nahant, John and wife Debbie of Danvers, and Brian of Nahant. Two other brothers, Kevin and David, predeceased him. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff on the Sunrise Unit of Linda Manor Extended Care for their loving and compassionate care during his long illness. Service information: A visitation was held at BOUCHER-O’BRIEN Funeral Home in Easthampton on Saturday, April 14 from 9-11 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of the Valley Church, Adams Street in Easthampton. Burial will be in Nahant in Greenlawn Cemetery on Saturday, July 7 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
