James A. Scanzillo, 70

GILBERT, Ariz. — Jim passed away peacefully at home in Arizona on Sept. 17, 2016, after a long courageous battle with kidney disease. He was born in Everett, August 25, 1946, to the late Armando and Doris Scanzillo. He graduated from Saugus High where he was a popular football player.

He enjoyed reading and spending his summers at his camp at Baxter Lake in New Hampshire.

He was a draftsman as well as a handyman who could build or fix just about anything.

He is survived by his loving sister and brother-in-law Linda and Jerry Muse, with whom he lived with in Arizona, his sister and brother-in-law Carol and Charlie McLaughlin and grandchildren Amanda, Kayla and Nicholas.

He was also predeceased by his beloved children Kerri Ann and Jamie Scanzillo.

Service information: A funeral Mass will be held on Oct. 13, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Saugus.


John P. Thompson, 95

SWAMPSCOTT John P. Thompson, Sr., 95, formerly of Swampscott and Salem, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at the Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody. He was the loving husband of the late Doris (Fleming) Thompson, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.

Born in Louisville, Ky., on Sept. 28, 1921, he was the son of the late Herbert and Anna (Shietinger) Thompson. He was raised and educated in Louisville and graduated from the University of Louisville. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Following the war, John began his career with General Electric in Ohio. He was transferred to New York and then Lynn, and retired from Arthur D. Little, Inc., where he worked in research and development.

He was a longtime member of the First Church in Swampscott and Tedesco Country Club. He enjoyed reading and spending winters in Holiday, Fla., where he was a member of the Cypress Run Golf Club.

He leaves his children, Sally Thompson and her husband George Gately of Peabody, Mark Thompson and his wife Laurel of Swampscott, and W. Randall Thompson and his wife Mary of Florida, his daughter-in-law, Linda Thompson, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Phil Thompson, a grandson, Kevin Gately, and a sister, Mary Alice Schwab.

Service information: His funeral service will be Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the First Church in Swampscott, 40 Monument Ave. Burial will follow in Swampscott Cemetery. Christos Nikolopoulos, 79

SWAMPSCOTTChristos Nikolopoulos, age 79, of Swampscott died peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, on Wednesday Oct. 5, 2016. He was the husband of Eleni (Paraskevopoulos) Nikolopoulos with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Kastorion, Sparta, Greece, he was the son of the late Nikolaos and Eleni (Papageorgakopoulos) Nikolopoulos. He came to this country in 1967 and has lived in Swampscott since 1970.

He was a self-employed carpenter working throughout the local area and North Shore. He took great pride in his work and was an excellent and patient teacher to others of his craft.

He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. He enjoyed hunting with his friends and led an active social life. He was a comical man who was the life of the party. He was a member of the Italian American Club in Lynn and of AHEPPA.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Maria Lannon and her husband Kevin, of Lynn, Nick Nikolopoulos and his wife Claudia, of Salem, and Kathy Dimopoulos and her husband Nick, of Danvers, seven grandchildren, Joseph, Christina and Matthew Lannon, Christopher and Emily Nikolopoulos, and George and Felecia Dimopoulos, his twin brother, with whom he would have celebrated their 80th birthday on Oct. 26, George Nikolopoulos and his wife Gale, of Salem, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Maria, Evgenia, Chrisostomos and Louis Nikolopoulos.

Service information: His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. from the SOLIMINE Funeral Home 67 Ocean St. (Rte. 1A), Lynn, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Church. SAUGUSMr. Frank E. Bangs, age 86, formerly of Peabody, died on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Beverly Hospital. He was the loving husband of Evelyn (Spinney) Bangs with whom he shared 54 years of marriage.

Born in Lynn and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late Morris and Helen (Welch) Bangs. Mr. Bangs was a graduate of Peabody High School and was a retired truck driver for the oil industry.

Besides his wife, Mr. Bangs leaves his three children, Ruth Hart and her husband Kevin of Stoughton, Robert Bangs and his partner Candace Conley of Saugus, and Rita Setera and her husband Scott of Colorado and their 2 children, Nalie and Brynn; his sister Barbara Risk of Salem, N.H.

PEABODY Caroline M. “Carol” (Cordeau) Oljey, age 95, of Peabody, formerly of Lynn, died peacefully on Monday, surrounded by her family in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Francis A. Oljey. Born and raised in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Muise) Cordeau. Carol had lived in Lynn for the greater part of her life, and attended St. Jean’s Grammar School and Lynn Classical High School. She had lived in Peabody for the past 11 years.

Carol enjoyed making ceramics for many years. She loved cooking and shopping. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family.

She is survived by her four children; Donna Lee Janus and her husband Thomas of Burlington, Dennis F. Oljey and his wife Jill of Swampscott, Timothy L. Oljey and his wife Carole of Newmarket, N.H., and Denise E. Fleury and her husband Ronald of Peabody. She also leaves 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her great-grandson; Evan Hansen and her twin brother; Joseph Cordeau.

Daughter of the late Amalia (Budriesi) Ottani and Alfonso Ottani. Mother of Mary Ann Begley of Andover and her husband John. Loving “Nonnie” to Jeffrey Begley and his wife Lauren, Mark Begley and his girlfriend Kayleigh Burgess. Ann is predeceased by her twin sister Mary. She was also the sister of the late Agnes Ottani, Frank Ottani, Laura Fallon, Elizabeth Ring, George Ottani, James Ottani and Jean Carter. She leaves many nieces and nephews who were dear to her.

NAHANT — With sadness, the family announces the peaceful passing of Helen Gertrude (McGrail) Staffier, formerly of Nahant, at The Bertram House in Swampscott, on Oct. 6, 2016. Dearly loved wife of the late Anthony F. Staffier, daughter of the late Ann Mooney and late Francis McGrail of South Boston. Loving sister of the late Marie Eunson, the late Bernice Dwyer, and the late Claire Fitzgerald. Helen is survived by her two daughters; the Honorable Nancy Staffier Holtz and husband Herbert of Waban, Edith Kenneally of Nahant, and her son, Anthony T. Staffier of Swampscott. She is also survived by her grandchildren Sean Owen Hanlon, Ailey Merrick Mastantuono, Liam Michael Kenneally, Jennifer Merrick Abate, Brian O’Hara Merrick, William Hunter Holtz and Harry Staffier Holtz.

She will be missed by her family, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, as well as her extended Bertram House family. Helen was a graduate of South Boston High and worked for Shell Oil, Liberty Mutual and NYNEX as a supervisor. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church of Nahant. Helen enjoyed traveling with her sisters and husband “Nat”, walking along the beach and spending time with her grandchildren. From her childhood years in her cherished South Boston, to her years in her beloved Nahant, Helen loved living near the ocean and could never dream of living anywhere else.

LYNNEleanor M. “Tippy” Fallon, 78, of Lynn, died Thursday at her home after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Brian F. Fallon, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage.

Born in Portland, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Harold C. and Almeda (Saccocea) Woerner. She attended schools in Somerville, moved to Lynn after high school and has lived in Lynn ever since. Tippy was employed as a teller at the Century Bank on State Street for several years, and was a lunch aide at the Ingalls School. She was also a Den Mother when her children were in Cub Scouts. She enjoyed knitting and weaving, but most of all loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her two favorite holidays were Christmas Eve and the Fourth of July.

She is survived by two sons; Brian H. and his wife Paula Fallon of Peabody, Keith and his wife Rose Fallon of Gonic, N.H., one daughter Kate Fallon and her wife Paula Hammond of Effingham, one sister Susan Thomas of Methuen, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald was a true gentleman and a friend, and his greatest accomplishment and joy was his family.

LYNN Joanne (Lavino) Durant, 74, of Lynn, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2016, at a local nursing home, after being stricken unexpectedly. She was the wife of the late Floyd “Butch” Durant, who just died, Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016. She was the daughter of the late John and Nina (Kuzmin) Lavino. Born and raised in Lynn, she was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, class of 1960. Joanne lived all her life in Lynn and worked as a receptionist for over thirty years at Empire Linen Service on Myrtle Street. She enjoyed supporting West Lynn National Little League and Pop Warner, bowling and shopping.

She is survived by her three sons, Scott Durant and his wife Laura of Lynn, Derek Durant and his wife Carolee of Lynn and Keith Durant and his wife Dedra of Johnston, R.I., her daughter Amy Durant and her fiancé Melvin Lark of Lynn, grandchildren Kevin and Kyle Durant, Joseph Cabozzi, Jordan Lark, Willie, Andre and Alyssa Miller. She also leaves her great-grandson Jordan Lark Jr. She was the sister of Jack Lavino of Boulder, Colorado, William Lavino and his wife Carol of Lynn, Ronnie Lavino of Lynn, Joseph Lavino and his wife Rosa of Salem, N.H., Jean McAvoy of Lynn and the late Richard Lavino and Janet Heilman. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

SAUGUS Mrs. Deborah L. Shubert, from Saugus and formerly of Salem, passed away at her home on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016. She was the loving wife of William E. Shubert.

Born and raised in Salem, she was the daughter of the late George and Simone (Belleau) Strout. She was a graduate of St. Cridian’s School in Salem. A devoted mother and homemaker, Mrs. Shubert retired as the secretary for the Guidance Office at the Northeast Regional Vocational School in Wakefield.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Shubert leaves three children; Kim Surette and her husband John of Saugus, Peter Shubert of Saugus, and Jamie Shubert of Saugus, 3 grandchildren; John Surette III and his wife Melissa, Michael Surette, CJ Surette, one great-granddaughter; Amelia. She was the sister of Wayne Strout and his wife Donna of New Hampshire, Peter Strout and his wife Kathie of Salem, and Rebecca Skerry and her husband Jon of Salem. Mrs. Shubert is also survived by many nieces & nephews.

LYNNMargaret Marion (Snow) White, 83, of Lynn, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016. Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Nora (Curley) Snow. She was the beloved wife of William E. White. Peggy was raised and educated in Lynn and was a graduate of the Lynn schools. She worked for many years as a waitress in many of the local area restaurants. Peggy was an avid BINGO player at the Knights of Columbus in Lynn and also enjoyed bowling; rolling in the leagues located in Peabody. She also thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Foxwoods to play the slot machines. Peggy is survived by her son, Roger Astbury, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Greenfield, Wis., her grandchildren; Steven and Lisa, her great-grandchildren; Olivia and Brooke and Elliaina and Abriana, and her sister, Nora Shamberger of Lincoln, N.H., as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings; Charlie Snow and Joyce Sullivan.

WAKEFIELD Mrs. Janice M. (Villagracia) Young, 69, formerly of Saugus, died on Sunday, Oct. 9, at her home in Wakefield. She was the wife of Robert P. Young, Sr. of Melrose.

Born and raised in Saugus, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Villagracia and Rita (Brooks) Meighy. She enjoyed playing golf at Hillview Golf Club in North Reading and she loved working for Hub International Insurance Co. as commercial department manager, where she was employed for 19 years. Janice had spent the last eleven years residing in Wakefield.

Janice also leaves five children, Robert Young, Jr. and his wife Jacqueline of Peabody, Lisa Young and Bill Plourde of Wakefield, Christopher Young and his wife Abir of Quincy, Debra Young of New Hampshire and Donna Young of Melrose; five grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, Sarah, Lindsey and Brianna; two brothers, Alfred Villagracia of Beverly and Ronald Villagracia of Stoneham. She is also survived by her lifelong friend Darlene Oxley. She is predeceased by her grandchild Corey.

Edmond J. Richard, 85

LYNN Edmond J. “Eddie” Richard, 85, passed away suddenly at home on Oct. 4, 2016, two weeks shy of his 86th birthday. He was the son of Urbain and Anne (Despres) Richard and married for 59 years to Lilian (Gardner) Richard, who passed in December, 2011. A graduate from the Lynn School System, a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army, he was stationed in Germany and received the Army Occupation medal. He was instrumental in initiating the Franco American War Veterans Post in Lynn where he was later the Commander of both Post 12 and the Amvets Post 161. He was also named veteran of the year in 1981-1982 timeframe. Eddie worked in the shoe manufacturing industry in Lynn, at “Bennies” and the Massachusetts State Lottery from which he retired.

He leaves behind two daughters Brenda (Richard) Coakley and her husband Kevin of N.J., Diane (Richard) Mello of Lynn, three grandchildren, Kevin Coakley, Jr. and his wife Sara, April Coakley Richards and her husband Mark, Ryan Mello and his wife Alicia, 5 great-grandchildren Darius Richards, Kiara Richards, Alana Coakley, Kevin Coakley III and Christian Coakley. He was predeceased by all his brothers and sisters Alice, Babe, Bea, Bill, Bonnie, Mary and Presley.

Sherman Kramer, 89

LYNNSherman Kramer, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016. Beloved husband of Faith (Packer) Kramer. Dear son of the late Solomon and Simi (Swartz) Kramer. Devoted father of Harriet Blau and her husband Fred Blau, Alan Kramer and his wife Elaina Louisos Kramer, Philip Kramer and Donna Kramer Merritt. Former father-in-law of Jodi Kramer. Loving brother of Phyllis Kramer and the late Edwin Kramer; grandfather of Esther, Elizabeth, Daniel, Joshua, Naomi, Jamie and Elyse; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Sherman was a pharmacist all of his life and was the owner, with his late brother, of the Lynn Drug in Lynn. After retiring he was a security guard at the PEM. He was a lifelong mason and loved horseback riding. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was an auxiliary policeman in Marblehead, directed traffic and was on the pistol team, where he frequently was the highest scorer. Sherman was a lifelong gun collector. He also worked with the State Police Department. He was on the cemetery committee at the Pride of Lynn where he is being buried. Sherman and Faith were square dancing partners.

Matthew W. Snow, 28

Matthew W. Snow, 28, passed away Oct. 9, 2016, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Born in Boston, he was the son of Nancy L. (Micue) Bishop, of Nahant, and the late Bradley W. Snow, who also had battled ALS. He was raised in Lynn and Haverhill and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 2006. He had also attended Salem State and Northern Essex Colleges and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal law.

Matthew had worked as a corrections officer for the Middlesex County Sherriff’s Department.

He enjoyed sports, especially the Patriots, and had formerly played in the Riverside Bradford Little League, Haverhill Youth Football, as well as on the Haverhill High School football and lacrosse teams. He enjoyed playing darts and golf and traveling. He was also a member of the AOH Division 10, Lynn. Matthew continues to help others as an organ donor.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father Thomas Bishop of Nahant, a brother Thomas Taylor Bishop of Haverhill, his girlfriend Brittany Mitchell of Lynn, his grandparents John and Nancy Micue of Malden, his aunts and uncles Tracy Micue of Georgetown, John Micue of Haverhill, his godmother, Deborah Mulally and her husband Jim of Everett, Bob Snow of New Hampshire and Debbie Alera of Malden, his godfather Ricky Moore of Lynn, a cousin Dan Snow, whose late father David had also battled ALS, a niece Grace, two nephews John and Ben, his aunt Marie Burns and many friends and cousins. He was also the grandson of the late Rita Duddy.

POLK CITY, Fla. — James V. “Jim” Graham, 69, of Polk City, Fla., formerly of Peabody, lost his battle with cancer on July 18, 2016.

He was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1965 and after graduation, Jim joined the Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.

He was the husband of Dianna (Cook) Graham and the son of the late John “Jack” Graham and Lucy (Castelluzzi) Graham. He is survived by his daughter, Kendra Cierri and spouse Joseph; his son Christopher Graham and his wife Angela; six grandchildren, Ashley, Kylie and Jonathan Cierri, and Owen, Madison and Tessa Graham. He also has a loving extended family of four other children, 10 additional grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is survived by a sister, Barbara (Graham) Rossignoli and her husband, Thomas. Jim was predeceased by a brother, William “Bill” Graham. Additional family members include nieces, nephews and great-nieces, great-nephews, uncles, and cousins.

Service information: A celebration of his life will be held on Oct. 15, 2016, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Peabody/Lynn Elks at 40 Oak St., Peabody. There will be a Coast Guard service at approximately 10 a.m. Please come down and share your life stories of Jim and his family. Expressions of sympathy may be made to any hospice facility of your choice or any cancer research center.

PEMBROKE, N.H. —  Pembroke Town Selectman Frederick L. Kline, 53, died unexpectedly on Oct. 4, 2016.

Born in Niskayuna, N.Y., Fred was the son of James M. Kline of Lynnfield and the late M. Claire (Rasch) Kline. He resided in Pembroke from 1999-2016.

In addition to his father, Fred is survived by his children, Rachel and Steven Kline, both of Pembroke. He was the brother of James M. Kline Jr. of Cibolo, Texas, Karen Prescott of Clermont, Fla., and Linda Parrette of Cornwall, N.Y. He also had several nieces and nephews, who fondly called him Uncle Freddy.

Fred will be remembered as a man of honesty and integrity who was devoted to his children and to his community. He loved his town and wherever there was a need, he was there to help. During his 10 years as a town selectman, he represented the board on numerous committees and town initiatives. Motivated by his love for his children, he also volunteered with Suncook athletics, Pembroke Little League, football, basketball, cheerleading, Boy Scouts and many other organizations and causes. He was a vibrant storyteller who brought laughter to all who knew him. Fred enjoyed music, sports, boating and fishing. He was employed as a technical account executive for Northeast Electronics for many years.

Service information: Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Fred’s memorial service, which will be held in the First Congregational Church of Pembroke, 301 Pembroke St. in Pembroke, N.H., on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Oct. 14 from 5-7 p.m. at the church. A private burial will take place in Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Congregational Church of Pembroke. Please write “In Memory of Fred Kline” in the memo. LYNN Paul C. Hoke, 58, of Lynn, passed away Sunday Oct. 9, 2016, following a lengthy illness. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Louis and Marion (Vitale) Hoke. Prior to his illness, he worked for Partner’s Healthcare and at BU Medical Center as a transcriber. He is survived by his brother Donald R. Swift Jr. and was a loving dad to his feline friends George and Ollie. He was the father of the late Joshua Hoke and brother of the late Raymond Hoke and the late Joseph “Jo-Jo” Swift.

LYNNGeorge “Georgie” Hosking, age 17, of Lynn, passed away peacefully at home after a long, courageous battle with cerebral palsy on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016. He was a lifelong resident of Lynn and was unconditionally loved by many. He was a happy boy and a fighter who loved music, colorful lights and joy rides in the car. He loved being read stories, adaptive skiing, dream night at the zoo and aquatic adventures. He enjoyed quality time with his Nana and his family. Georgie is survived by his mother Mariessa Lopez, his sister Milyana, his grandmother Brunilda Lopez, all of Lynn, his aunts Elissa Lopez of Lynn and Erika DeLeon of Peabody, he was cherished by many aunts and uncles including his Godparents Joe and Lynette Lopez of Lynn, as well as many cousins, friends and caregivers.

Service information: Visitation will be in the GOODRICH Funeral Home, 128 Washington St., Lynn, on Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. with a service held during. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the family and addressed to the funeral home.
