Flora E. Evans, 90

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Flora E. “Reta” Evans, 90, passed away Saturday following a brief illness.

She was born and raised in Lynn, the daughter of Elsbree and Emma Thompson. After graduating from Lynn Classical and attending Boston University, she married the love of her life and traveled the world as a devoted Navy wife. Following a transfer to King’s Bay Submarine Base, they settled in Jacksonville, Fla. Reta was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Jacksonville and an avid reader.

Reta was preceded in death by her husband, John K. Evans (RMCM/SS Ret.); her youngest son, Glen L. Evans; her parents, and brother, Donald R. Thompson. She is survived by her brother, Richard C. Thompson (USN Ret.); her son, John B. Evans and his wife Gwendolyn; grandson John Hunter Evans and wife Melissa; great-grandson John Grayson Evans; grandson Harrison F. Tennant and fiancé Brittany Hobbs; granddaughter Victoria B. Evans; daughter-in-law Laurie Evans; granddaughters Brandice Evans, Whitney Reagan; and great-grandsons Tyler Evans, Zeph Evans and Liam Reagan. She also leaves countless friends.

BERWICK, Maine — Kevin Kennedy, 44, of Berwick Maine, formerly of Lynn. Entered into eternal rest on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016. Beloved son of William and Barbara Kennedy of Groveland. Also leaving behind wife Gina of Lynn; daughter Valerie Johnson of Haverhill and son Ben Johnson of Peabody; brother Brian and sister-in-law Melissa of Kingston, brother Shawn and sister-in-law Kristina of Georgetown and brother Heath of Groveland, as well as loving nephews Justin, Joshua, Chase, Jacob, Mason and niece Allison.

Kevin was a 1990 graduate of Lynn Tech and former employee at the Veolia North America Plant in Lynn. Kevin loved his family, friends and animals very much as well as his Harley.

Service information: Viewing services to start at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016 and Mass services will start at 11 a.m. at New Hope Assembly, 9 Assembly Drive, Saugus, MA 01906.

DANVERS Betty Pauline (Brown) Best, 88, died peacefully on Sept. 30, at the Hunt Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, after a lengthy illness.

Betty was born June 8, 1928, in Danvers, the daughter of the late Homer Clayton Brown and Alice L. “Lois” Sweeney. She graduated from Holten High School in 1946. She lived in Danvers most of her life and worked as a waitress at many Danvers restaurants, including the Hyland Diner and the Village Green. She later worked at Devcon, retiring in 1990. She loved traveling with her sisters and also loved to sew and crochet.

Betty leaves two children; Pamela J. Best of Fairhaven, Mass., and Brian K. Best and his wife Mary of Salem; one grandchild, Emily E. Best of Salem. She also leaves six siblings; Evelyn Fleming of R. I., Norma L. Brown of Danvers, Patricia Frohman of Danvers, Jacqueline Getchell of Beverly, Paul H. Brown of Danvers, and Susan Harrison of Beverly, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jacques J. Hatchouel, 87

PEABODY Mr. Jacques J. “Jack” Hatchouel, 87, of Peabody, passed away on Friday Sept. 30, 2016, at Salem Hospital. He was the husband of the late Gloria (Mathon) Hatchouel, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Oran, Algeria, he was the son of the late Joseph and Juliana (Aznar) Hatchouel. At the age of 17 he joined the French Navy serving at the end of World War II. He arrived in this country at 20 starting out in Roxbury. He then settled in Nahant raising his family for over 40 years prior to moving to Peabody 15 years ago.

Jack attended Northeastern University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering. He was employed as an Engineering Manager at the GE Riverworks Plant in Lynn for over 25 years until his retirement.

One of his proudest moments was when he became a U.S. Citizen. He was an avid boater, loved traveling, tennis, cooking, a good glass of wine, and was always a fabulous host. In his recent years he enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Torigian Sr. Center in Peabody, where he was an active member. He was a lifelong learner and could make or fix almost anything. He lived life to the fullest and would take pride in making others smile. His greatest pride was his family and his greatest joy was to spend quality time with them all.

He is survived by his children, Carl Hatchouel and his wife Kerry, of Peabody, Colette Ford and her husband Mark, of Ga., and Philip Hatchouel and his wife Laurie, of Lynn and the late Paul Hatchouel. He had seven cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Steven, Emily, and Philip “PJ” Hatchouel, and Chandler, Madison, and Chloe Ford, as well as several loving nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Josette Schnetzer.

Service information: His funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home 67 Ocean St. (RTE1A), followed by burial in Greenlawn Cemetery in Nahant. John D. Reid Jr., 49

LYNN John D. Reid Jr., 49, died Sept. 29, 2016, after a brief, but heroic, fight with cancer. Born and raised in Lynn; he was the son of Janice (Barnette) Reid of Lynn and the late John D. Reid.

John had lived in Lynn most of his life. He worked at various jobs throughout the years, including delivery for a dental lab, cooking in a restaurant and detailing at a car wash. He was an exceptional handyman around the house, in the yard or working on a vehicle. But his favorite and most important job was being a fulltime father, and he was an incredible one.

John loved to walk along the beach each night, accompanied by his children, his love or alone.

He was the cherished father of Craig Reid, Sean Reid and Nicholas Reid and his very special love Ellen Landry all of Lynn. He also leaves behind a slew of very close friends that he considered family.

Mary Spanos, 87

PEABODYMary (Zarules) Spanos, 87, of Peabody, passed away Saturday afternoon at the Hunt Nursing Home in Danvers following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Ernest T. Spanos.

Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Virginia (Bogas) Zarules. She was a life long resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School.

Mary was employed for several years at Travel Rite Leather in Peabody, worked alongside her husband running Ernie’s Cape Ann Diner in Gloucester for many years and later was employed as a sales clerk at Hickory Farms in Danvers.

Mary had a tremendous sense of humor and had an infectious laugh. Mary was an avid reader. She loved sharing holidays with family and friends and making traditional Greek foods. Mary will be dearly missed by all.

Mary is survived her son Timothy Spanos and his wife Janet of Peabody, her daughter Virginia Spanos and her long time partner, Dana Jones of Lynn. She was predeceased by her siblings, George Zarules and Agnes Lignos.

LYNN Joseph “Joey” William Tarasuik, 46, of Lynn, passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Amber (Stalnaker) Tarasuik. Born in Lynn, he was the son of Joseph and Lynne (Barber) Tarasuik of Lynn. Joey graduated Saugus High School, Class of 1988. He also attended Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla. He was a locksmith, which he enjoyed very much. He bred hamsters and loved them. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his children, KateLynne Rose and Jonathan Wayne Tarasuik of Fremont, N.H., his brothers, Shawn Michael Tarasuik of Andover, Todd Jay Tarasuik of Parish, N.Y., and Ryan Scott Tarasuik of Lynn, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

SALEMDenise Ann Thomas, 44, of Salem, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24 suddenly at her home in Salem. She was born in Lynn on Jan. 23, 1972, to Ronald H. Thomas of Methuen and the late Joanne Thomas. She graduated from Lynn English High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in social work from Salem State College. Denise was working as a freelance photographer and in her spare time enjoyed gaming, photography, art, going to the beach in Rockport and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Denise had a huge heart and was always helping those in need.

Denise is survived by her partner Kasey Poor, sister Lisa Anderson-Hollins and Robert Anderson of Methuen: the late Jennifer Thomas, nieces Kayla Hollins, Kiarah-Lee Anderson, nephews Devin and Robert Anderson , aunts, uncles, cousins and her friends Laurie Dougenik, Lisa Johnson, and Kristin Paone.

DANVERS Floyd “Butch” Durant, 73, of Danvers, formerly of Lynn, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at a local nursing home, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Joanne (Lavino) Durant, and the son of the late Delmer and Laura (Manning) Durant. Born and raised in Watertown, N.Y., Butch moved to Lynn in 1965. He graduated from Watertown High School, Class of 1962 and worked for Boston Traders on Sutton Street in Lynn for many years as a warehouse manager. Active in Little League in Lynn, Butch was the former President of Lynn Little League, Pop Warner, West Lynn Little League and the Lynn Classical High School Boosters. He enjoyed playing cribbage and bowling, coaching baseball and football.

Besides his wife Joanne, Butch is survived by his three sons, Scott Durant and his wife Laura of Lynn, Derek Durant and his wife Carolee of Lynn and Keith Durant and his wife Dedra of Johnston, R.I., his daughter Amy Durant and her fiancé Melvin Lark of Lynn, grandchildren Kevin and Kyle Durant, Joseph Cabozzi, Jordan Lark, Willie, Andre and Alyssa Miller. He also leaves his great-grandson Jordan Lark Jr., and was the brother of the late Phyllis Durant.

SAUGUSEric R. Jarosz, of Saugus, Oct. 3, age 49, was taken into the arms of the Lord after a long illness.

Born and raised in Saugus, Eric graduated from Saugus High School in 1985, Northeastern University and Massachusetts School of Law in 1994. He practiced criminal law out of the Lynn District Court.

He leaves his mother, Janice (Penney) Jarosz; sons Ronald, Daniel and David; brothers Jay of Manchester, Thomas of Saugus; and sister Lisa Parker of Saugus; nieces Haley, Amber and Jessica, nephews Justin, Jay T., Andrew and Tommy. He was also the son of the late Ronald Jarosz. He also leaves his uncles Ralph, Lance and Keith Penney, aunts Justine (Penney) Dolan and Joanne Penney. Also survived by his former wife Barbara (Keene) Jarosz.

SPRINGVALE, Maine Stocker, Richard “Warren,” 89, of Shapleigh, Maine, formerly of Saugus and Reading, and Nokomis, Fla., died peacefully at Greenwood Center in Sanford, Maine, on Monday, Oct. 3, 2016.

Devoted husband for 68 years of Hazel J. (Skinner) Stocker, loving father of Allan D. Stocker and his partner Freda of Wilmington and Jean Stocker Higgins and husband James of Needham.

Born and raised in Saugus, son of the late Allen Milton (Mit) Stocker and Elizabeth M. (“Bess” Sears) Stocker. Dear brother of the late Dorothy B. Warden of Saugus. Brother of Charles K. Stocker of Kittery Point, Maine. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and his cherished dog, Cindy.

Warren was born and raised in Saugus, graduating in 1944, then served his country for two years in the Navy, stationed in the South Pacific during WWII. Warren helped to build his home in Saugus where he and his wife lived and raised their family until their move to Reading in 1963.

Warren was a proud member of IBEW Local 103 for over 65 years working for M.B. Foster and Mass Electric Construction Company as a master electrician and general foreman. Past member of Masonic Lodge in Reading, Warren enjoyed 28 years of retirement, living in both Nokomis, Fla., and at their beloved home in Shapleigh, Maine. Warren’s interests included boating, fishing and snowmobiling as well as cooking and home projects.

Rosalie M. Harris, 67

SWAMPSCOTT Mrs. Rosalie Marie (Macone) Harris, age 67, of Swampscott, died Sunday at Salem Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of Raymond Harris, with whom she shared 42 years of marriage. The couple had one daughter, USMC Capt. Jennifer Jean Harris, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2007.

Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of Gina (Ciaramaglia) Macone of Nahant and the late Pasquale Macone. Mrs. Harris spent her adult years in Nahant and Swampscott.

Mrs. Harris was a 1968 graduate of Somerville High School and a graduate of Salem State College. Upon graduation from Salem State College, she became an elementary school teacher in Nahant, where she taught for many years. She promoted educational opportunities for all. The mother of a marine, she championed veterans programs and helping those who serve. Mrs. Harris had multiple sclerosis and supported the MS Society Organization. She was a member of St. John’s Church in Swampscott and enjoyed activities at the Swampscott Senior Center.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her brother, Anthony Macone and his wife Linda of Nahant; her sister, Marie Ahern of Woodbridge, Va.; a nephew and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Ahern of Hollywood, Md., a niece, Christina Ahern of Woodbridge, Va.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Corton of Florida, a nephew and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Corton of Saugus, and a niece and her family, Ann Corton Sollberger of Berwick, Maine.

GEORGETOWN Mrs. Louise J. “Dolly” (Peralta) Bruner DelColle, age 94, of Georgetown, formerly of Lynn, died on Monday, Oct. 3, 2016 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Edward V. Bruner and the late Alfred L. DelColle.

Born and raised in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Margaret L. (Ruggiero) Peralta. She attended Lynn schools and was a graduate of Lynn English High School, Class of 1940. She had lived in Lynn for her entire life prior to moving to Georgetown six years ago.

Dolly was a longtime active communicant of Holy Family Parish in Lynn. She had joined the family business (F.J. Peralta Insurance Agency) and was employed there for many years.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Bruner and his wife Donna of Georgetown; a daughter, with whom she lived, Susan Steeves and her husband Russell of Georgetown; five grandchildren, Russell Steeves Jr. and his wife Jennifer, Thomas Steeves, Brendon Bruner and his wife Katy, Alison Anderton and her husband Brian and Colleen Schroeder and her husband Eric, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Marion Quimby, Marjorie Gioiosa, Lena Plourde, Atty. F.J. Peralta Jr. and Joseph Peralta.

HUDSON, N.H.Marlene Willey, age 75, of Hudson, N. H., died Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, N.H., after being stricken suddenly while fighting a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Norman F. Willey Sr., and the daughter of the late William and Josephine (Lance) Tucker. Born in Lynn, she was raised in Saugus, and educated in Saugus schools. She worked as a quality control inspector at General Electric in Wilmington and later for Amitek. Marlene enjoyed knitting, crocheting, shopping and reading. She loved to dance.

Besides her husband Norman, she is survived by her son Norman F. Willey Jr. of Hudson, N.H., two daughters Liane Giard and her husband Michael of Husdon, and Cheryl Eddy of Burnsville, Minn., and her seven grandchildren, Alyssa Marlene Baldwin, Jonathan P. Eddy, Janessa A. Eddy, Rachael E. Willey, Crystal H. Giard, Sarah M. Giard and Katelyn L. Giard. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Cecelia and Sandra Tucker, many nieces and nephews, a lifelong friend Nancy Lunt of Ariz. and dear friends Bob and Phyllis McEachern. She was the sister of the late Robert, Steve, Frederick and Edward Tucker.

Vanthea Brown, 96

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. Vanthea “Van” Brown, 96, of North Haven, passed away on Aug. 22, 2016. She was born in Lynn, Dec. 8, 1919, daughter of the late Maria and James Vasiliou, and sister of the late Catherine Savko and Cleon Vasiliou.

Mrs. Brown was the wife of the late Harry Thomas “Topper” Brown of Sussex, England. She was a graduate of Lynn’s Classical High School in 1937, and Burdett College, where she earned a business degree in Stenography.

She was first employed by the U.S. Federal Government as a Civilian Administrative Assistant, serving in the offices of the War Department in Lynn; the Air Material Command and Army Air Forces in Boston; and the Board of Appeals of the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC. She went on to enter the State Department Foreign Service Diplomatic Corp in 1948, working in the Office of the Military Government for the UK/US Coal Control Group, based in the Ruhr Valley of Essen, Germany.

While in Germany, she met and married Harry T. Brown, who was serving with the British Armed Forces as a Captain in the Royal East Kent Regiment. After traveling extensively throughout Europe and completing her tour of duty, she and Mr. Brown returned to the States and ultimately settled in Conn., where Mr. Brown entered the life insurance business with the Insurance Company of North America.

Mrs. Brown went on to work for several Conn. firms: Dataproducts, NE; Plastic Forming Co.; Sanitas Service Corp.; High Standard Sporting Firearms; the Foreign Office, Yale University; and American National Bank, Hamden, before retiring in 1975.

Both she and her husband were active tennis players and members of The High Lane Club, Hamden and The Farms Country Club, Wallingford.

She leaves two daughters, Barbara A.M. Brown of Madison, and Pamela J. Brown of North Haven, and two grandchildren, Erik J. Brown and Leslie P. Brown.

LEE, N.H.Natalie A.(Whalen) MacLaren, 86, of Lee, N.H., and formerly of Saugus, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at the Portsmouth Hospital.

Natalie was born in Stoneham to the late John P. and Mabel (DeAvilla) Whalen. Natalie worked for over 13 years in Home Fashions with Sears in Newington, N.H., and 22 years at Stone and Webster in South Boston where she was employed as a data entry clerk. Upon her retirement in 1995, Natalie moved to Lee, N.H. During her spare time, Natalie loved to cook and was an avid reader, however, her greatest passion was being in the company of her family.

Natalie was the beloved wife of the late Allyn R. MacLaren Sr. and is survived by her children, Barbara Chiarello and her husband Rudy of Groveland, Carol Stockbridge of Lee, N.H., and Allyn “Rusty” MacLaren Jr. and his wife Mindy of Keene, N.H.; her eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her sister, Joan Donahue of Medford and her sister-in-law, Susan Harnden and her husband Ed of Groveland, as well as several nieces and nephews. Natalie was predeceased by her daughter, Denise A. Bulafkin.

Richard F. Langford, 85

SWAMPSCOTTRichard F. Langford, age 85, of Swampscott, died Oct. 4, 2016, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Lois (Santry) Langford, and the son of the late Ronald and Bernadette (Thibedeau) Langford. Born and raised in Lynn, Richard lived in Swampscott most of his life. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. Richard worked as a carpenter in the Swampscott and Lynn area, and was an avid boater.

Besides his loving wife Lois of 61 years, he is survived by his two sons, Richard Langford Jr., of Marblehead and S. Douglas Langford and his wife Sandi of N.C., his daughter Lisa White and her husband Kendrick of New Jersey and two brothers, Ronald Langford and Paul Langford, both of Florida. He also leaves four grandchildren Emily Caron, Colby and Palmer White, and Sydney Langford. He was the father of the late Suzanne Langford and brother of the late Mary Doyle, Eileen Ventresca, Margaret Johnson and James Langford.

Service information: A graveside service will be held at the Veterans Lot of Swampscott Cemetery on Friday at 12 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. John D. Reid, 49

LYNNJohn D. Reid Jr., 49, passed away Sept. 28 after a brief, but heroic, fight with cancer. Born and raised in Lynn, he was the beloved son of Janice (Barnett) Reid of Lynn and John D. Reid Sr. of Waltham.

John loved to work around the yard and work on cars. He also had a passion for cooking and was a great chef. He also loved walking along the beach in the evening. He was a wonderful, loving father. He leaves behind sons Craig Reid, Sean Reid and Nicholas Reid. He was predeceased by a newborn daughter. He also leaves sons Johnny and Joseph.

He was the brother of Kathy O’Fallon of Lowell and Tony Kozlosky of Memphis. He was uncle to Kaelan and Kira O’Fallon of Lowell and Lindsay, Tony, Amelia, Lilly, and Abigail Kozlosky of Tennessee. He also leaves a stepmother, Donna Reid of Waltham, several aunts, uncles and cousins, and an abundance of close friends whom he considered family.

Service information: Relatives, friends and public are invited to a memorial gathering to be held at GOODRICH Funeral Home, 128 Washington St., Lynn, Thursday Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Richard J. Votano, 67

LYNNRichard John Votano, age 67, of Lynn, died Tuesday after a lengthy illness. He was the longtime companion of Nancy Gorman of Lynn. A lifelong Lynn resident, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Irene (Coocen) Votano. Richard had worked as a bricklayer for Frasca Construction. He loved the ocean and was a WWII history buff. He cared for everyone he knew and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his companion, Nancy, he is survived by three sons; Salvatore Votano and his wife Risa of Middleton, Richard Votano, Jr. of N.H., and Anthony Votano of Lynn; his grandchildren; Brad Paone of Rockport, Michael Votano of N.H., and Rachelle, Rhea and Shae Votano of Middleton; his great-grandchildren; Max and Paul Paone of Rockport; his siblings; Joy Gutro and her husband Sonny of Fla., Dolly Waldron of N.H., William Votano and his wife Sandi of Lynn, Delfino Votano of Swampscott and Virginia Votano of Lynn; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Patrick Joseph Votano and Barbara Irene “Rene” Votano; the former husband of the late Barbara (Frasca) Votano; and brother of the late Pat and Paul Votano.

Service information: His funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rt 129), Lynn. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Diane Demakes, 96

LYNN Diane Demakes, age 96, of Lynn, died Tuesday Oct. 4, 2016, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was the daughter of the late Euthymios and Ioanna “Jean” (Koutsogeorge) Demakes. She was born and raised in Lynn, where she lived until 1976. She moved to Swampscott and lived there the rest of her life. She graduated from Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1937.

As a youngster, Diana worked with her parents and siblings in producing her mother’s recipe for Greek Sausage “Locanico”, originally peddled in their Waterhill Street neighborhood, later sold locally under the Holiday Brand label, and today by Old Neighborhood Foods.

She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn, where in her younger day, she enjoyed singing in the choir, as well as, traveling to Europe on several extended trips.

She worked for Holiday Brand on Waterhill Street as a bookkeeper until 1957. After retirement as a Credit Union Manager from Cabot Corp in 1982, she was the first woman elected to the Board of Directors at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn and served as Treasurer for several years.

Diana was the youngest of her large family and was devoted to them. She was the last of her siblings to survive, living a long and blessed life, facing all the losses she suffered with grace. In later years, she loved visits from her many nieces and nephews, and enjoyed cooking and sharing her recipes. For many years she hosted family parties at Christmas and Easter at her condo clubhouse. These festivities were enjoyed by third and fourth generations of Demakes descendants. She has left all her family with unforgettable memories.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Louis E. and Nicholas Demakes, Atty. Charles Demakis, Peter Demakis, Mary Katsos, Carol Billows and Alice Comenos.

Service information: A funeral service for Diana will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Lynn at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held in the church from 9-11 a.m. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, “Burn the Mortgage Fund”, 54 So. Common St., Lynn, MA 01902.
