LYNN — Dorothy J. “Dottie” “Dot” (Langlois) Macaione, a lifelong resident of Lynn, passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, February 7, 2020, one month after celebrating her 100th birthday. She was the beloved wife of the late James V. Macaione, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage and predeceased her in 2001. Born in Lynn in 1920, Dot was the daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy (Germain) Langlois. She was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from St. Mary’s Girls High School in 1937. She worked for Premier Shoe Shop, T.W. Rogers, The Dime Store, General Electric River Works, was a clerk at Union Hospital for many years and as the office manager for Dr. Julius Sozanski. She was a volunteer ESL Teacher in the Lynn Asian Community and served in the auxiliary at Union Hospital for many years. She was a former First Aid Instructor for the American Red Cross and former Air Raid Warden. Starting in 1956, Dot became involved with the Girl Scouts. “Girl Scouts has been my life,” she told the Lynn Item in a 2018 article. Her longtime commitment to the Girl Scouts has earned her some of the organizations highest honors; Thanks Badge (1985), President’s Award (2012), Thanks II Badge (2018) and many others. Dot was also a proud member of the Lioness Club in Lynn beginning in 1985 to 1992 and becoming a Charter Member of the Shoe City Lions Club in 1992, who honored her as the Woman of the Year in 2015. She held many positions, including serving on the Board of Directors and was awarded the distinguished Melvin Jones Award, the highest award given to a Lion. She served on the Board of Massachusetts Senior Action Committee, North Shore Chapter and advocated tirelessly for seniors across the Commonwealth and in 2016, she was nominated as their “Unsung Hero”. She was the resident representative for St. Theresa House Board of Directors, where she lived, an avid reader and enjoyed jig saw puzzles and crossword puzzles. She was a talented knitter and quilter and member of the Hammersmith Guild, often using her skills with St. Mary’s Church Shawl Committee and at Centerboard. Dot was a true champion of volunteerism in her daily life, saying, “It doesn’t take much to be a volunteer. All you’ve got to do is do it. That has been my motto. The years have been good to me.” and “I do not feel I do more than others. I just feel we should all work to make things better for each other. It is just what I have always done.”
Dorothy is survived by her loving daughters Dorothy R. Thibodeau and her companion William Foglietta of Lynn and Mary-Ann Macaione and her companion John Turner of Peabody; her grandchildren, Kimberlee Girard, Paul Amirault and his wife Amy and Mark Amirault and his wife Cameron; her great-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Ryan, Amelia and Eloise; her sister Sr. Dorothy Marie Langlois, C.S.C. Sisters of the Holy Cross, South Bend, Indiana; her dear friend Tom Pappas and her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her siblings Frank, Albert, Robert, Charles and Bernice Langlois and Theresa Dooley and Marie Minor.
Service Information: A Funeral will be held on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 9:30a.m. in the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt. 129), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary Church, Lynn at 10:30a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
