LYNN — Dolores Lorraine (Landry) Smithers, 82, a lifelong resident of Lynn, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at Blueberry Hill Healthcare in Beverly after a sudden decline in health due to Alzheimer’s disease. Dolores was the beloved and devoted wife of Edward “Buddy” Smithers of Lynn, with whom she shared more than 60 years of marriage and unwavering mutual support.
Born in Lynn on Oct. 24, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Frederic V. and Marcell (Coulombe) Landry. Dolores was the loving mother of Ron Smithers, Debra Brown and her husband, Kip, Sue Beatty and her husband, John, all of Lynn, Karen Smithers and her partner, Gina of Braintree, and the late John and Thomas Smithers; the cherished grandmother of Ron Smithers Jr. of Lynn, Erica Tanguay and her husband, Gregg of Pelham, N.H., Tim Smithers of Chapel Hill, N.C., Justin Brown of Lee, N.H., Eric Brown of Andover, Molly Brown and her fiancé, Justin of Groveland, Keri Smithers of El Paso, Texas, Christine Smithers and her fiancé, Nick of Danvers, Michele Beatty of Marblehead; the great-grandmother of Jordan and Hailey Tanguay and Shane Smithers; the dear sister of Al Landry and his wife, Karen of Juniper, Fla., Marcelle Simes and her husband, Jim of Lynn, Don Landry of Acton, Maine, and the late Carol Maguire and Laurie Chiappini; and the aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Described by a colleague as possessing an “irrepressible gift of passionate commitment to healing, helping and teaching,” at the age of 66, Dolores became a licensed practical hospice nurse after raising six children and a 24-year career in teaching and educational administration. Dolores graduated from St. Jean Baptiste High School in Lynn with the Class of 1953. While raising her young family of six children, Dolores became a substitute teacher at her alma mater, St. Jean-Baptiste, where some of the older children attended. During that time she enrolled in classes at North Shore Community College and Salem State College to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching. After graduation, she taught second and first grades at St. Jean-Baptiste School in Lynn for more than 10 years before becoming its first lay principal. During her career at St. Jean-Baptiste she also earned Master’s degrees in Education and Education Administration from Salem State. She went on to use her skills in a variety of roles at St. Pius V School for several years after being forced to close St. Jean-Baptiste in 1992.
Dolores’ later career change to becoming a hospice nurse evolved from what a colleague called her “zeal and natural instincts for ministering to the ill and dying.” These qualities came from her strong religious faith and several formative personal and professional experiences providing care to the ill and dying, including her two sisters. In 1999 after becoming principal at Little Flower School at St. Benedict’s Parish in Somerville and within two years of her retirement, Dolores felt called to help her sister, Laurie in New Hampshire after she was diagnosed with cancer. This powerful experience, as well as caring for Laurie’s dying husband after her death, inevitably led to Dolores’ decision to enroll in a program to obtain her licensed practical nurse certification after which she joined Hospice Care, Inc. in 2002 where she worked until her retirement in 2007. Dolores enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and reading.
