William P. Howell, 87

LYNN — Mr. William P. “Red” Howell, age 87, of Lynn, died on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with dementia.  He was the devoted husband of the late Mary M. (Mullarkey) Howell, who predeceased him in 2012. Born in Chelsea in 1930, Bill was the son of the late William A. and Helen L. (Slater) Howell.  He was raised and educated in Revere and Saugus and attended Saugus High School. He was a United States Navy Submarine Veteran of the Korean Conflict and honorably discharged in 1954. Bill was a bus driver for the MBTA for many years and was a proud member of the Boston Carmen’s Union, Local 589, for over 50 years.  He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox. He was an active member of the United States Submarine Veterans Marblehead Base, and a 50 year member of the Holland Club. Bill enjoyed music, old movies, and spending time at the beach. Bill and Mary shared a strong religious faith and were longtime parishioners of St. Mary’s Church.  He was hardworking, rugged, patriotic and proud. Family, faith, laughter and a good story was his motto in life. He enjoyed having a good meal.

Bill is survived by his loving children, Thomas Howell of Norwood, Tina Thibodeau and her husband John of Lynn and Diane Kulyk and her husband Michael of Kittery, Maine; his cherished grandchildren, Rachel, Trevor, Emily, Kevin, Anthony and Amelia; his brother, Raymond Howell of Ipswich; his sister Florence Brady and her husband Thomas of Topsfield; his brothers-in-law, William Mullarkey of Danvers and Robert Johnson of Merrimac; his daughters-in-law, JoAnn Howell and Susan Howell and his many nieces and nephews.  He was the father of the late David Howell and brother of the late Ellen Johnson.

Service information: A Funeral will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. from the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt. 129), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 8 S.
