Richard J. Lynch

Richard J. “Dick” Lynch, age 91, of Swampscott died peacefully on Sunday April 15, 2018 at Massachusetts General Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of JoAnn (Joyce) Lynch, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Geraty) Lynch. He attended Lynn Schools and was a graduate of Lynn English High School, class of 1945. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a master’s degree for Salem State College.

Dick was a US Navy Veteran of World War II.

Dick was a longtime teacher, coach, and mentor in Swampscott, influencing countless lives over the years. He had also served as the Athletic Director for Danvers High School for many years.

Dick’s accomplishments were recognized with many awards, most especially he was elected to the Lynn English High School, Swampscott High School, and Massachusetts State Basketball Coaches Halls of Fame and in February 2014 the gymnasium in the Swampscott High School Fieldhouse was dedicated as the Richard “Dick” Lynch Gymnasium. He enjoyed gardening and walking the beach. Dick was an avid tennis player and was a member of the North Shore Tennis Club, the Swampscott Beach Club, and the Meadowlarks. He was a Communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott, where he began the Parish’s CYO Basketball program. Dick could always be found in the stands for all of his grandchildren’s games.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 4 children; Michael Lynch and his wife Mary Ellen of Winchester, Terry Lynch and his wife Celeste of Needham, Maura McMahon and her husband Mark of Swampscott, and Tara Kalinowski and her husband Jerry of Marblehead, 9 grandchildren; Kelly, Molly, Katey and her husband David Antonelli, Deanna, David, Michael, Mark, Timothy, and Abigail, and 2 great grandchildren; Ryan and Charlie. He was also the brother of the late Albert Lynch and Havlin Gately.

Service Information: A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church 178 Humphrey St., Swampscott. Burial will follow in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church 178 Humphrey St. Swampscott.
