LYNN — Charles D. “Doug” Stead Sr., of Lynn, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 3, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Devarenne) Stead with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Frederick Sr. and Charlotte (Dunn) Stead.
A lifelong resident of Lynn, Doug graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1948, and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Korean War. He was a self-employed carpenter working beside his father, brother, and uncles building many homes throughout Lynn and Saugus. Eventually he took over the construction business employing two of his sons.
Doug enjoyed his home, gardening, reading, drawing, painting, and trips to Maine, but he especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends and relatives. Doug always had a kind heart, a friendly way, and a great sense of humor. He was also an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed many years at Suffolk Downs racing horses alongside his horse trainer and good friend Wayne Marcoux.
Doug is survived by his five children, Mark A. Stead, Charles D. “Doug” Stead Jr., Glenn F. Stead, Donna M. McInerney and her husband Mark, and Lori A. Murray and her husband Bob, all of Lynn. He was the loving grandfather of Jill (Murray) Sandler, Jodi (Murray) Carmody, Allison McInerney, and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brotherly nephews Ronald Penley and Richard Penley of Lynn, and many other special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Maria Jane Penley and his brothers, Neville Stead and Frederick Stead Jr.
