Although she lived a long life, it is with great sadness Lee Carol Regnante passed quickly and peacefully with her daughter and friend by her side on May 4, 2018.

Lee was the youngest of four siblings, born to the late Anthony and Josephine (Adorno) Ferrando of Syracuse, N.Y. Lee graduated high school in her hometown and entered the Navy during World War II. She graduated Navy Secretarial Training at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was selected to be the receptionist at the Navy’s Camp Elliott Base in San Diego (1944-46). Lee’s gracious and welcoming manner made her the perfect person for this position of greeting all levels of rank who visited the base. Lee had a wonderful voice and was a member of the 25th Regiment Singing Platoon at Hunter College and the female singer in the band at the San Diego Yacht Club during this time. She also performed a few times under the direction of the world-renowned conductor, Leopold Stokowski.

After the Navy, she moved to Fort Benning, Ga., to help her oldest sister and husband with the birth of their first child and also learned how to ride a horse. Her love of horses started at this time and was one of her passions. While visiting a friend on the North Shore in the late 1940’s, Lee decided to move to Salem and applied her great style and organizational skills working for a woman’s retail store and later as an office manager. She married Gene W. Regnante in 1951 and in 1954 gave birth to their daughter, Karen L. Regnante.

The family moved to Nahant in 1956 where they designed and built their home of 62 years. Lee had a great love of life, beauty, and style. She loved her home, her family and friends and living in Nahant. She was a member of the Nahant Garden Club and Nahant Country Club and loved being creative and welcoming people into her home. She was passionate about cooking, cars, traveling, art, theatre, decorating, gardening, and living on the beach. She was an amazing mother and friend to many with a heart filled with grace and unconditional love. She had a great spirit, joyful heart, wonderful smile, infectious laugh and zest for life.  Her friendship and love will be forever remembered and deeply missed by those who knew her.

GLOUCESTER — William (Pappas) Papagelis, age 70, died peacefully in his home in Gloucester on May 22, 2018.

Born and raised near the GE River Works in West Lynn, William, who went by Will or Willie, learned the rudiments of work and achievement that would define his life. From parochial school at St. Patrick’s in West Lynn through his years at Lynn Classical High School, he enjoyed close friendships that would last throughout his life.

After graduating from Lynn Classical (Class of ’66) he joined the Navy in 1968 during the Vietnam conflict, serving with his twin brother Wayne and earning an honorable discharge in 1970. That same year he entered the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Working nights and weekends and with the help of the G.I. Bill, he graduated in 1974, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Immediately after college graduation he was selected for a food and beverage management training program at the Ritz-Carlton in Boston. He was passionate about his career and went on from the Ritz to managing hospitality operations for the next eight years at five-star hotels, the Fairmont in San Francisco and the Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla. For business purposes he shortened his name to Bill Pappas, and as such he went on to a widely diverse career. In the hotel business he developed a keen interest in wines and spirits and was recruited in 1982 to work for Joseph E. Seagram in sales and marketing for the fine wine division, and later joined Nestle Corporation in National Account Sales for the Northwest Division.

His experience with Seagram’s and Nestle, teaching and marketing inspired Will to continue his own education. In 1990 he went back to school to earn his Master’s Degree in Education and further on to earn a PhD in Instructional Design for Online Learning. Dr. Pappas worked as an associate professor at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, Idaho, Manhattenville College in New York, the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and finally the American University in Cairo.

Dr. Pappas retired from higher education in 2007. He lived out his life at his beautiful home in Gloucester where he enjoyed gardening, walking the beach, and jogging along the winding roads at Wingaersheek. He ran the Boston Marathon twice, volunteered at the Dana Farber Hospital and the Veterans Administration in Boston, and became a caregiver for the Hospice of the North Shore. He loved the outdoors, hiking and biking.

William loved to find new adventures by traveling and learned about various cultures by living in many countries during the winter months of his retirement and sharing his discoveries in his travel blog BilltoGo. For the last 10 winters he lived in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Patagonia, Japan, South Africa, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam), India, Australia, and Russia. Japan was his favorite and he went back twice. Traveling by train and staying with families in Air bnbs, Will spent his time in cafes meeting the people, in museums learning the culture, gazing upon the wonders of nature and human endeavor, and in cooking classes gaining culinary skills and knowledge of spices and unique flavorings. Mostly he spread goodwill, peace and joy, bringing back art, teas, jewelry and clothing from each place he visited. Surely, William D. Papagelis lived a full life to the fullest!

David Kane, 57

WEBSTER — David Kane, of Webster (and longtime resident of Saugus), died on May 21, 2018, after a prolonged battle with traumatic brain injury. He was 57 years young.

Born on April 15, 1961, in Saugus, Dave is the son of the late Johanna and Robert Kane, and the brother of the late Robert Kane. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon; granddaughter, Hannah; both of Hampton, N.H.; and grandson, Barry; whom Dave adopted and lovingly raised. He is also survived by his sister, Laura Kane; and his brother, John Kane; both of Saugus, as well as many nieces and nephews.

By trade, Dave was a CNC machinist, but an injury forced an early retirement. He lived his life according to the tenets of Buddhist philosophy. If a life could be measured by deeds, then Dave’s would be one of abundance. He touched so many lives, and he would do anything for family, friends, and even strangers.

Family was paramount in his heart, and his capacity for love was truly boundless. And to say that Dave had more friends than just about anyone would be a disservice. Dave didn’t make friends, he made family. And he had the largest family.

Dave’s passion was music, especially live concerts; but none more so than the Grateful Dead. It was within that culture that he found like-minded brethren, and his second family. He was most at home sitting around a campfire with people he cherished, playing the music he loved.

From afar, some would say that Dave was quite a character. But to those fortunate enough to know him, we’d say that he had a rock-solid character. Honest, kind, devoted, and in possession of the most infectious belly laugh, there was nothing fake about Dave. He was truly the genuine article. His gentle soul will be sorely missed. May the four winds blow him safely home.

Service information: There will be gathering of family and friends on Saturday, June 2 at The Elks Lodge, 401 Main St., Saugus, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will also be a Celebration of Life with live musical performances on Saturday, July 7 at the Bull Mansion in Worcester.
