NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — In memoriam: On Jan. 31, 2015, Paul A. Howard, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 77.
Paul was born on Oct. 19, 1937, son of the late Winthrop W. and Emma E. (Little) Howard of Lynn and Hamilton, brother of the late Brian W. Howard of Sanford, Maine. He graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1955.
In 1957 he married the late Patricia A. Scharffenberg of Lynn, his high school sweetheart, and together they raised a family. Paul is survived by three children: Richard Howard, of Hamilton, Thomas Howard, of Conway, N.H., and Bonnie Cheek of Madison, N.H. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Emma Cheek, of Madison, N.H., Sarah Cheek, of Conway, N.H.; Sarah Deane, of Tucson, Ariz., Emily Chin, of Danvers and Kevin Howard, of Greenville, S.C.; as well as two great-grandchildren: Lila Chin, of Danvers and Grayson Deane, of Tucson, Ariz.
Paul loved his family, and leaves behind many beautiful memories. He was a talented all-around machinist by trade for most of his life. For many years he was the manager of Stewart Bros. Inc. in Lynn and was also employed by Howard K. Dearborn in Fryeburg, Maine. Paul was very active in the Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge and took pride in becoming the Master of the Lodge. Before his death he was awarded his 50-year masonic pin by representatives of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.
He worked very hard all his life to provide for his family, and he taught us so many things. “Anything worth doing is worth doing right.” He taught us to obey the rules, how to fish, build a campfire, how to build a boat, and to change the oil in our cars every 3,000 miles. He was the master of home improvements … Ma would come up with the ideas and Dad would make them reality.
He was a lover of the history of all things, including the Boston Red Sox. There are memories of stories about Ted Williams when we were little. He was a keeper of the family history as well and told us stories of ancient ancestors back to the days of the Pilgrims. Paul was a Troop Leader for Boy Scout Troop 190 in Lynn and made a positive impact on the lives of many Scouts.
He would take the family on camping trips to the White Mountains every weekend in the summer, creating wonderful memories. He was the leader of the “Howard Family Hike to Frankenstein Cliff.”
I would guess that Dad’s proudest accomplishments were his family. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply, and they loved him back. He was a great example to all of us. Rest in peace Dad.
To honor Paul’s character, we ask that all who wish to participate donate to the Massachusetts Freemasons Grand Lodge Scholarship Program in his name. Anyone wishing to support this most important program is urged to send your donations to the Development Office. A program is in place for naming scholarships for one year, four years, or a lifetime.

“I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses
And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own”
