Patricia A. Howard, 80

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — On May 14, 2019, Patricia A. “Pat” Howard, loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 80.

Pat was born on Dec. 16, 1938, daughter of the late Ivar H. and Isabel M. (Dalton) Scharffenberg, and sister of the late Alan H. Scharffenberg of Lynn. She graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1956.

In 1957 she married the late Paul A. Howard, of Lynn,  her high school sweetheart, and together they raised a family. Pat is survived by three children: Richard Howard, of Hamilton, Thomas Howard, of Conway, N.H., and Bonnie Cheek of Madison, N.H. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Emma Cheek, of Madison, N.H., Sarah Cheek, of Conway, N.H., Sarah Deane, of Tucson, Ariz., Emily Chin, of Danvers and Kevin Howard, of Greenville, S.C.; as well as two great-grandchildren: Lila Chin, of Danvers and Grayson Deane, of Tucson, Ariz. Pat was predeceased by her loving husband Paul in 2015.

Pat was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind many beautiful memories. She grew up during the age of sock hops and Elvis Presley, and met her one true love at the local soda fountain where he was working as a young soda jerk. Then came marriage and children, and she quickly became an expert builder of soap box racers, a Cub Scout Den Mother and the inventor of “The Happy Club.” She had an incredible talent for making something from nothing, as a talented artist, crafter, antique collector, florist and shopkeeper. She was the daughter of Ivar … her hero … who taught her to create. She used her imagination and drive to solve all problems and was the inspiration and driving force of the Howard family. She loved Disney World and visited 29 times over the years. She loved to fish and camp, and often reminisced about biking and camping trips on the Kancamagus Highway with her daughter Bonnie. She was a lover of plants and a friend to animals. She loved the White Mountains … her “somewhere over the rainbow” place.

Among Pat’s proudest accomplishments were the two shops she ran in North Conway, and her participation in the Litchfield, Windsor and Fryeburg Fairs over the years. She was a bright star of the Fryeburg Fair, and a friend to the people of Expo 1 where she exhibited in six booths for 30 years.

Those who knew Pat know she hated being fussed over and would rather give than receive. In lieu of funeral services, and to honor Pat’s character, we ask that all who wish to participate donate to any animal or children’s organization in her name. She was particularly fond of the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg, Maine ( www.harvesthills.org/ for donations).

“When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation

And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart

Then I shall bow with humble adoration

And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art”

Paul A. Howard, 77

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — In memoriam: On Jan. 31, 2015, Paul A. Howard, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 77.

Paul was born on Oct. 19, 1937, son of the late Winthrop W. and Emma E. (Little) Howard of Lynn and Hamilton, brother of the late Brian W. Howard of Sanford, Maine. He graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1955.

In 1957 he married the late Patricia A. Scharffenberg of Lynn, his high school sweetheart, and together they raised a family. Paul is survived by three children: Richard Howard, of Hamilton, Thomas Howard, of Conway, N.H., and Bonnie Cheek of Madison, N.H. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Emma Cheek, of Madison, N.H., Sarah Cheek, of Conway, N.H.; Sarah Deane, of Tucson, Ariz., Emily Chin, of Danvers and Kevin Howard, of Greenville, S.C.; as well as two great-grandchildren: Lila Chin, of Danvers and Grayson Deane, of Tucson, Ariz.

Paul loved his family, and leaves behind many beautiful memories. He was a talented all-around machinist by trade for most of his life. For many years he was the manager of Stewart Bros. Inc. in Lynn and was also employed by Howard K. Dearborn in Fryeburg, Maine. Paul was very active in the Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge and took pride in becoming the Master of the Lodge. Before his death he was awarded his 50-year masonic pin by representatives of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

He worked very hard all his life to provide for his family, and he taught us so many things. “Anything worth doing is worth doing right.” He taught us to obey the rules, how to fish, build a campfire, how to build a boat, and to change the oil in our cars every 3,000 miles. He was the master of home improvements … Ma would come up with the ideas and Dad would make them reality.

He was a lover of the history of all things, including the Boston Red Sox. There are memories of stories about Ted Williams when we were little. He was a keeper of the family history as well and told us stories of ancient ancestors back to the days of the Pilgrims. Paul was a Troop Leader for Boy Scout Troop 190 in Lynn and made a positive impact on the lives of many Scouts.

He would take the family on camping trips to the White Mountains every weekend in the summer, creating wonderful memories. He was the leader of the “Howard Family Hike to Frankenstein Cliff.”

I would guess that Dad’s proudest accomplishments were his family. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply, and they loved him back. He was a great example to all of us. Rest in peace Dad.

To honor Paul’s character, we ask that all who wish to participate donate to the Massachusetts Freemasons Grand Lodge Scholarship Program in his name. Anyone wishing to support this most important program is urged to send your donations to the Development Office. A program is in place for naming scholarships for one year, four years, or a lifetime.

If interested in these endowment programs contact the Development Office, 617-426-6040, or Development@MassFreemasonry.org, and you will be referred to the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee.

“I come to the garden alone

While the dew is still on the roses

And the voice I hear, falling on my ear

The Son of God discloses

And He walks with me

And He talks with me

And He tells me I am His own”
