PEABODY — Ellen R. (Gibbons) Hughes, age 75, of Peabody, formerly of Salem and Swampscott, died on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at Continuing Care at Brooksby Village, after a brief illness.
Born in East Boston, Ellen was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Coogan) Gibbons. She was raised in Swampscott and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Girls High School, Lynn. Ellen had also earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Emmanuel College in Boston and a master’s degree from Salem State College.
For many years Ellen had taught first grade and served as a special education administrator in the Lynn School System.
Ellen enjoyed the arts and frequently attended the symphony, ballet and the theatre. She also enjoyed restaurant week in the Boston area.
She is survived by two sisters, Shelagh Gibbons-Ichimura of Seattle, Wash., and Maureen Bellante of Swampscott; a brother, Laurence Gibbons of North Carolina, eight nieces and nephews, and eight grand nieces and nephews.
Service information: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 followed by burial in Swampscott Cemetery.
