SWAMPSCOTT — John J. Nevils, age 83, of Swampscott, died on Friday Nov. 25, 2016, at Salem Hospital, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Lois (Phalen) Nevils, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of Swampscott, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nora (Broderick) Nevils. He attended St. John the Evangelist Elementary School and was a graduate of Swampscott High School, Class of 1950. He had also earned an associates degree from the former Burdett College.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, John had served on the USS Adirondack in Italy during the war. After the war he was stationed in Norfolk, Va., as a crew member testing ships’ seaworthiness.
He had worked as a field service engineer for many area computer firms, including Analogic Co., Peabody, from which he retired in 1998.
He enjoyed golf and was a co-founder of the Analogic Golf League. He was an active Communicant of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Swampscott, and was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and a volunteer at the food pantry at the Parish. A life member of the Swampscott VFW Post 1240, he was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Marblehead Elks, and the Gerry 5, Marblehead.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Thomas Nevils of Peabody, and Mary Jean Nevils and her husband Paul Rizk of Swampscott, two grandchildren, John and Elizabeth Rizk of Swampscott, a sister, Marie Galvin of Swampscott, a sister-in-law, Barbara Nevils of Florida, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Timothy Nevils.
Service information: A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott, burial will follow in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home 67 Ocean St. (RT. 1A), Lynn.
