Enrico A. Mongiello, 84

TOPSFIELDMr. Enrico “Rick” A. Mongiello, 84, of Topsfield, died peacefully on Nov. 11, 2016, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was surrounded by his loving partner of 20 years Marianne G. Strong.

Born in Lynn, Rick was the son of the late John A. and “Marie” Assunta (Fabucci) Mongiello. Raised and educated in Lynn, he graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1950. After high school, he attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering from Northeastern University, Boston.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army from 1953 until 1955. While stationed in Germany, he was a member of the official United States Army Track Team.

An outstanding athlete, Rick excelled as a short distance runner and competed throughout his life in track events. A decorated champion runner, he was the Massachusetts Intermediate Class A Champion in the 50 yard dash, he was the “Record Holder” at Boston Garden in 1948 and was the Mass. Indoor State Champion, Class A, 300 yard dash in 1950. He continued his athletic career at UMass Amherst and tied the school track record in the 35 yard dash. In recognition of his accomplishments he was inducted into the Lynn English High School Hall of Fame in 2015.

He was a member of the Town of Burlington’s Personnel Board, the Lynn Meadowlarks and the Lynn Elks.

Mr. Mongiello had been employed with the Raytheon Company in Sudbury for many years until the time of his retirement. He was also a member of the Raytheon Track team.

Rick was predeceased by his daughter Judith Bernoth, his sons, John Mongiello and James Mongiello and his brother John A. Mongiello.

Rick is survived by his partner of 20 years, Marianne Strong of Topsfield, Marianne’s daughter, Johanna Strong of Amesbury, her son, Kelly Strong and his wife Terese of Melrose and their children, John and Isabella; Rick’s grandchildren, Jeffery Bernoth and his wife Rachel of Tewksbury, Robert Bernoth and Raychle Bernoth, his son-in-law Stephen Bernoth of Billerica, his sisters; Gloria Terrell of Mesa, Ariz., Norma Mongiello of Long Beach, Calif., Emilia Mongiello of Salem and Clorinda Bettencourt and her husband John of Lynn and many nieces and nephews.

Service information: His funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, 12 Park St., Topsfield, on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hour prior to the Mass in the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Final resting place is St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn.
