EAST KINGSTON, N.H. — James D. Cashman, of East Kingston, N.H., born in Lynn, son of William Cashman and Dorothy (Doyle) Cashman. He was the loving husband of Janise (Smith) Cashman for nearly 48 years.
He is also survived by his daughter, Tracy Cashman, son-in-law, Daryl Belock, grandchildren, Daryl James and Chloe, his brother, William Cashman and wife, Carol, his sister, Janet Johnson and husband, William, his sister, Lois Cole and husband, Bill, his brother, Ed Cashman and wife, Marie, his brother, Rick Cashman and wife, Yong Suk, his brother, Larry Cashman and partner, Lynne Ellis, his sister-in-law, Lori Dostie and her husband, Paul, his nephew, Kyle Dostie and his wife, Jess, his nephew, Alex Dostie, his nephew, Michael Harvey, whom Jim watched out for after the passing of his mother, and many other nieces and nephews.
He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, in 1962, then attended Boston College, graduating in 1966 with a BA in Languages, as well as later receiving his Certificate of Accounting from Salem State.
Jim spent many years working for Star Market, and later served for several years as the treasurer and tax collector for the Town of Newbury. Due to his mind for numbers, he also had a seasonal business as a tax preparer for friends and family, which grew every year due to the number of referrals he received.
Jim was always an active member of his community, serving as the longtime treasurer for the Byfield Town Water Board and acting as a trustee for the Newbury Town Library. He was a member of the Newbury-Rowley Lions Club for many years, elected as treasurer and President, and voted as Lion of the Year. For the past several years he served as a volunteer at Anna Jacques Hospital, and served on the Essex County Retirement Board. Most recently, he served on the Board of Directors for the Maplevale Community. Due to his height of 6’9” and his easygoing manner, he was well-known and loved in his longtime residence of Byfield and his newer home in East Kingston, N.H.
He loved sports of all kinds – he was a die-hard Boston sports fan and a longtime coach of Byfield Little League as well as Georgetown girls’ basketball and softball. His passions were his family, especially his grandchildren, watching and playing golf, reading and traveling with his wife, Janise.
Service information: Family and friends may call on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the funeral home. A celebration of James’ life will follow the calling hours in the funeral home. Burial will be private at a later date.
