On May 19, 2020, our beloved mother Frances J. (Greenleaf) Gilhooley, of Lynn, age 86 entered into eternal rest at home with her loving family at her side following a lengthy 6-year battle with Dementia. Frances was born and raised in Marblehead, MA, then became a lifelong resident of Lynn after marrying her late husband, James J. Gilhooley with whom she shared 53 years of marriage. Frances is survived by  her five  children,  Retired Sergeant James S. Gilhooley of the Massachusetts State Police and his wife Diane, Dr. Mary Dill and her husband Daniel, Karen McGrath, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Sharon Costine and her husband Robert, and Maureen Shultz and her husband Michael. Frances was heartbroken over the loss of her youngest child Shawn Patrick Gilhooley last month due to the Covid 19 virus. She also leaves her eight grandchildren Kerrian Lampert and her husband Matt, Kelsey Dill and her fiancé Brian Penesso, Megan Shulman and her husband Stephen, McKenzie Shultz, Lauren McGrath, Mason Shultz, Heath McGrath, and Taylor Shultz and one great grandchild Sydney Lampert. Frances was soon to expect her second great grandchild Spencer. Frances was also the grandmother to the late Maddison Shultz.

Frances graduated from the Beverly School of Nursing in 1956. She started her career at Lynn Hospital before starting a family. After her children were enrolled in school, she returned to nursing at the Lynn Convalescent home where her kindness, caring and compassion to all the patients there was unwavering.  On holidays she would bring a lonely resident home, so they were surrounded by her big family and to enjoy one her of delicious home-cooked meals.

Frances’ passion in life was her family, friends, and her faith in the Lord. She never spoke an unkind word to anyone and always saw the good in everyone. Anyone who met Frances fell in love with her instantly. She enjoyed every moment of motherhood and was involved in all aspects of her children’s lives.

Frances was involved in many activities which included the Nahant Ladies Book Club, Red Hat Society, Girl Scout Leader, Eucharistic Minister for St. Mary’s Church, chaired the St. Pius Annual Bazaar knitting and crochet booth for many years. She loved traveling, baking, knitting, reading, and crocheting. A treasured gift from Frances was a baby hat and matching sweater which she always gifted with love.  She loved our neighborhood on Rockingham Street and was often seen walking while praying the Rosary.

Words cannot express how grateful we are to Maureen McKenna and Iris Rodriguez for their love, support, and dedication to our Mom and our entire family.
