He was drafted to the Army at age 17 to fight in WWII in the Pacific arena and finished his GED later in life. He was proud to serve his country and always expressed gratitude to others who had done so whenever he saw a defining cap.

He worked at different jobs in life but took the most pleasure working at Salem Hospital. He began in Security and continued on to Evening Supervisor of the Patient Transport Department from where he retired in 1991. It was at Salem Hospital where he met his wife, his forever soul mate, in 1974.

His favorite hobbies were playing computer interactive games, taking nature walks, flower and bird photography and reading. At all times, he took pleasure in assisting his wife with all her hobbies and endeavors, especially at Christmastime where he was the Happy Humbug in the kitchen. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Ipswich.

In addition to his wife Helena, with whom he shared 45 loving years of marital bliss, he leaves behind a daughter Linda Cassidy of Swampscott, a granddaughter Melissa Smithurst and her husband Daniel Smithurst and a very loved great-grandson Oliver Smithurst all of Sandown, NH. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and many In-Laws with whom he spent many a cherished occasion over the past 45 years. He also leaves behind his cherished cat, Minnie. He was predeceased by two sisters; Jean Rich of Annisquam and Marcia McSwiggin of Danvers.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic, a celebration of life will be held at a later date where family can gather as he had wished. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St, Beverly. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to his favorite charity, The Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Avenue, Salem MA 01970.
