LYNN — Deacon John McCormick Bresnahan Jr., age 77, of Lynn, died Thursday at Salem Hospital after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Dolores (Davis) Bresnahan, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.
A lifelong Lynn resident, he was the son of the late John M. and Muriel (Earp) Bresnahan. He was a graduate of Lynn English High School, Class of 1960, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Salem State University in 1964.
John had worked as a teacher at Cobbett Jr. High School and Lynn Vocational and Technical Institute, retiring in 2001. He was also elected to the Lynn City Council in 1971. He was ordained a deacon in 1980, spending 20 years at St. Agnes Parish in Middleton, and then at Holy Family Parish in Lynn until 2018.
He was named Irishman of the Year in 2019 by The Knights of Columbus, Valladolid Council #70 in Lynn. John published articles in several magazines including the Yankee Magazine, and also wrote a column for the Lynn Item in the 1970s. He loved to travel, visiting China, Russia, Alaska and many other places in the United States.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Lauretta Bresnahan of Lynn, David Bresnahan and his wife Kelley of Peabody, Luke Bresnahan and his wife Alana of Salem, and Amy Hunt and her husband Edward of Lilburn, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Kyra, Meeghan, Dillon and Emily Bresnahan, and Jessica, Sarah, Kateri and Timothy Hunt; two great-grandsons, Willie and James Bruce; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Service information: Adhering to the guidelines of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the CDC, services will be private.
