Edward Barry Schaffner passed away after a long illness in Newburyport on April 14, 2020 at the age of 78.
Ed (also known to family and friends as Barry or E.B.) was born on Jan, 6, 1942 in Winchester to Robert Daniels Schaffner and Dorothy (Potter) Schaffner. He grew up in Lynnfield, graduated from Wakefield High School in 1959, and then from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1961.
On July 2, 1966, he married Dorene Parsons in Lynn. They soon moved to Georgetown where they raised their two children. He began working for General Electric in Lynn after graduation, then worked for Boston Machinery in Peabody as a skilled CNC machinist and technician for more than 30 years. He traveled all over New England to fix machines, sightseeing along the way. Even after retiring, he happily continued to assist longtime customers who called for technical advice. He enjoyed working on his numerous car and bike projects and was a member of the New England Norton (motorcycle) Owners club. Ed was always humble, with a quiet sense of humor, and loved animals, especially Keeshond dogs.
Ed is survived by his wife Dorene; daughter, Rebecca and her husband Jose of Edgecomb, Maine; son, Daniel and his wife Jennifer of Rowley; grandsons, Ian and Graham; and his brother, James Schaffner of Beavercreek, Ohio. He was predeceased by his father Robert D. Schaffner, mother Dorothy P. Schaffner, and sister Susan D. Schaffner.
Ed’s family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Avita of Newburyport and Compassus Hospice for their compassion and excellent care while he was a resident.
