LYNN — Muriel Lorraine Magner (Emmons) passed away on December 11th, peacefully at home, surrounded by family and loved ones after a brief illness.
Muriel was born in Lynn to Ellen (Peterson) Emmons. A lifelong West Lynn resident, Muriel worked more than 30 years at the Norelco / Philips Lighting Company as a quality control inspector, retiring in 1989. Muriel had a strong faith and was a long-time parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Lynn.
Muriel was the beloved wife of the late John P. Magner, with whom she shared five sons: John, James, Leo, Richard, and Timothy. After the untimely death of her husband John, Muriel resiliently raised five sons on her own. She was a devoted mother and caretaker to anyone who needed her along the way. In 1978, Muriel’s son Leo Magner was killed in Germany while serving in the US Army during a tragic tank accident. Muriel became a Gold Star mother.
Muriel had a magnetic energy about her and a zest for life like no other. Singing karaoke, dancing, drawing, trips to the casino, and daily walks to the corner store for scratch tickets were just a few of the things that Muriel enjoyed. In addition, Muriel loved to travel. Trips to Naval bases in Scotland, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico were a few of her fondest trips, taken with her niece Trudy and her husband Bob. For many years, Muriel bowled with her dear friend, Cindy White in the morning league at Lucky Strike in Lynn, and at Metro Bowl in Peabody. Muriel was a fan of all Boston athletic teams and loved to attend any sporting event, recital, or ceremony that any one of her many relatives were participating in. Above all else, Muriel loved spending time with her family. She had the “gift of gab” and loved to laugh and tell stories.
Muriel is survived by her sons- John P. Magner Jr. and his wife Georgie of Boston. James M. Magner and his wife Catherine Magner of Lynn. Richard P. Magner and his wife Barbara of Lynn. Timothy W. Magner and his wife Anne of Lynn. She was mother of the late Staff Sgt. Leo D. Magner- U.S. Army. She leaves behind her daughter-in-law Donna Magner of Indianapolis, IN.
She leaves behind her dear sister, Ellen Morgan of Lynn and beloved God-daughter Rainy Caisse of Lynn with whom she shared many special memories together. She leaves behind her sister in-law Audrey Emmons of Derry N.H. She was affectionately known as Mooga, Nana Magner and Granna to her 12 Grandchildren- Jennifer, James, Kristine, Maureen, Philip, Charlene, Vivian, Melissa, Timothy 2nd, Karen, Jill, and Shannon. 14 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her siblings -Sumner Emmons, Muriel, Charles Emmons, Ernest Emmons, Mabel Carlson and Elaine Emmons.
Service information: Muriel’s visiting hours will be in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Monday evening December 16, 2019 from 4-7 PM. Her Funeral Service will be in the Funeral Home on Tuesday morning, December 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at a later date in St. Josephs Cemetery, Lynn.
