PEABODY — Peter R. McGovern, age 75, of Peabody, died peacefully on Saturday at Salem Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Constance “Connie” (Cotter) McGovern, with whom he shared 48 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late William and Catherine (Magrane) McGovern. He grew up in the Barry Park neighborhood of West Lynn with his 11 brothers and sisters, and attended Lynn schools. He had lived in Peabody for the past 10 years.
Peter, known as “Rocky,” was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Lynn and the Loyal Order of Moose in Salem, and was an avid pool player. He was most proud of his Irish heritage, often using the phrase “McGovern Strong.” Peter enjoyed many cruises with his wife, Connie. He cherished his time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved spending time with all his relatives. Peter was known for being a hardworking man, devoted to his family. Although he will be greatly missed, he is now at peace with the family members who predeceased him. He would not want his loved ones to grieve for him.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his two sons, Toby McGovern of Virginia and Peter R. McGovern Jr. and his wife Jill of Norwood; three grandchildren, Skylar Manning of Portland, Maine, and Tylor and Destinee Hughes of Peabody; his sister, Carol Ann Couillard and her husband Ronald of Florida; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Petrillo and her late husband Frank of Lynn, Brian Cotter and his wife Pam of North Carolina, Connie McGovern of Peabody, Leone McGovern of Kansas and Thomas Montgomery of Saugus; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Traci McGovern, his brothers William “Buddy,” James, Thomas, Bernard, John Paul and Francis McGovern, and his sisters Mary “Tootsie” Ulatowski, Adeline Newhall, Margaret “Peggy” Mathes and Joan Montgomery.
Service information: His funeral will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Lynn, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lynn.
