LYNN — Dr. Edward T. Rafferty, age 96, died on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Catherine F. (Nannery) Rafferty, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of Lynn, he was the son of the late Dr. Thomas B. and Catherine T. (Curry) Rafferty. He attended Lynn schools and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1939, where he remained an active member of the Alumni Association. After leaving Classical he attended Holy Cross College and then graduated Cum Laude in 1946 from Tufts Medical School.
Dr. Rafferty entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served for seven years in Newport, R.I., and then in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 18 years. He began his practice in Lynn in 1948, specializing in urology and was on the staff of Lynn and Union hospitals and also served as the Essex County medical examiner until his retirement in 2002. For many years he was a professor of Urology at Boston University.
Dr. Rafferty truly loved and believed in the City of Lynn and in the people of Lynn.
He is survived by his six children, Brenda Howard and her husband James of Plainville, Gail Carr of Salem, Catherine Carey and her husband Craig of Danvers, James Rafferty of Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas Rafferty and his wife Marissa of Ipswich, and Ellen Tansey and her husband Philip of Danvers; and nine grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Dr. Thomas Rafferty
Service information: His funeral will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. from the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Pius V Church, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectively invited. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Edward T.
