SAUGUS — Mrs. Joan H. (Marland) Spence, age 88, died at the Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody on Thursday, June 6. She was the wife of the late Richard E. Spence.
Born in Lynn and a lifelong resident of Saugus, Mrs.
Spence was the daughter of the late John Y. and Grace (MacKenzie) Marland. A 1948 graduate of Saugus High School, Joan was head cashier at the Continental Restaurant for 25 years as well as working as the personal secretary to the former late Superintendent of the Saugus Public School system, William Doyle. Her many hobbies included travel, arts and crafts, tailoring, knitting and ceramics, as well as participation within various organizations and clubs.
Joan is survived by her five children, Pamela Russo and her husband James of Lynnfield, Barbara “Buffy” Crosby of Florida, Lauree Spence of Georgia, Debbie Limegrover and her husband Rick of Florida, Scott Spence of Topsfield; nine grandchildren, Jared, Brandon, Jessica, Jeff, Laura, TJ, Richie, Brittnee and Sarah; and her best friend since she was 4 years old, Inez Taatjes. She was predeceased by her son, Richard Spence and her brother, Ronald Marland.
