Ronald F. Gately, 64, of Lynn, died on Thursday November 22, 2018 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston after fighting a short battle with cancer. He was the husband of Claire (Alexander) Gately, whom he shared over 41 years of marriage. He was born and raised in Lynn, the son of the late John Gately and Rose (Aligo) Gately, and was a graduate of Lynn English High School, Class of 1971.
Ron had been a martial artist for most of his life and owned a karate studio, Masters Self Defense Centers, in Waltham for many years. He ranked as a 6th degree black belt Master Instructor before beginning his law enforcement career.
Ron began his police career in 1990 at Bentley University Police Department before serving 21 years at Boston University Police Department, graduating from the 26th Plymouth Police Academy Class in 1997. During his police career he received many awards and commendations.
Ron was also passionate about teaching new and veteran police officers with lifesaving skills. He was a senior police defensive tactics and firearms instructor for over 25 years. During that time, he educated thousands of police officers across the state.
He had a love for music and playing guitar, along with rooting for all Boston sports teams. Ron had a keen sense of humor that was loved by all and will be remembered as a compassionate, fun loving person, who wanted to serve others. His greatest love was spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren.
Ron is survived by his daughters, Sharon LaPlante and her husband Adam of Methuen and Erica Moran and her husband Joey of Los Angeles, Calif., his grandchildren, Jackson and Mya LaPlante, Harper and Nolan Moran, along with many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as thousands of brothers and sisters in blue. He was predeceased by his sister, Rosalie Gately.
Service information: His Funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Solimine Funeral Home 426 Broadway (RTE129), Lynn followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Pius V Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
