Joseph L. Desmond, 84

NAHANT — Joseph Leo Desmond, age 84, of Nahant, died on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at his home after a very brief illness. He was the husband of Diane Alice (Cullinane) Desmond, his wife of 59 years.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Joseph Leo and Josephine Frances (Regan) Desmond. He was raised in Somerville and Nahant. He graduated from Cranwell Prep, Class of 1952 and of Boston College, Class of 1956.

Joseph was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, First Coast Guard District, Boston.

He owned and operated East Point Trucking.

Joseph was a dedicated member of St. Thomas Aquinas. He was a past president of the Parish Council, Eucharistic Minister to the sick and an active member of the choir. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. Joseph was past commodore of the Nahant Dory Club, a member of the Nahant Harbor Advisory Committee and after his retirement he drove the Council on Aging bus for many years. He was also on the Board of Directors at My Brother’s Table and Catholic Charities. Joseph also volunteered to deliver food and necessities all over the North Shore and Boston with his good friend Bill Magner.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Joseph III and Kacey Desmond, Julie and Richard Cadigan, Patrick and Ellen Desmond, Kellie and Robert “Skip” Frary, and close family friend Eileen Fagan. He is also survived and loved by his grandchildren, Sarah and Michael, Sean, Richard, Joseph IV, Kate, Lucy, Abigail, Matthew, and a great-grandson, Leo. Joseph leaves a sister, Josephine and her husband Joseph Ostroski; a sister-in-law, Sandra Desmond; and his nephews, Daniel, David, and Michael. He was also the brother of the late Daniel Desmond.

Service information: His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church. If you plan to send flowers the family wishes you to send them to a senior to brighten their day.
