Joseph F. McDuff, 76

NAHANT — Mr. Joseph F. McDuff, 76 years old, of Nahant and formerly of Lynn, died after a courageous battle with Progressive Supra-Nuclear Palsy. He was surrounded by his loving family. He is the husband to the love of his life, Marie F. (Pepin) McDuff.

He was born in Pawtucket, R.I., the son of the late Thomas F. McDuff Jr. and the late Antonio J. Basile and Dorothy May (Cushing) McDuff-Basile. He was raised in the Brickyard section of Lynn and was a 1959 graduate of the then Lynn Trade High School Electrical Program and he played football for the Tigers.

He served in the Army Reserves as a member of the motor pool. He began his career as the youngest licensed electrician in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He then worked at the GE in Lynn until beginning his career as a journeyman, rising to the master electrician level with the IBEW Local 103 in Boston. Joe took great pride in all of the projects, buildings and high rises he worked on in and around the Boston area. He especially took great care redesigning his home to accommodate special needs.

He loved St. Maarten, cruises with his wife, traveling, skiing, swimming, dancing, golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He was the chairperson for the MDA Lynn Telethon Committee, a softball coach, a member of the Polish, Russian, Lithuanian and American Citizens Club in Danvers (PRLA). He was also a member of the Lynn Snow Chasers, Kelley Greens Golf Course, YMCA in Marblehead and the Parkinson’s Exercise Group.

Joe was a steadfast advocate and paved the way, setting the precedent for today’s standard of inclusion for his son, Shawn, and many others.

In addition to his wife, Marie with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, he leaves a daughter, Shelli M. Mahan and her husband James; and one granddaughter, Megan. He is predeceased by his son Shawn J. McDuff, who passed Dec. 31, 2017. He leaves a daughter-in-law, Maria DiScipio; two sisters, Patricia Basile-O’Hearn and her husband Michael of Seabrook, N.H., Dorothy J. Basile and her partner Joseph Giguere of Lynn. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. In addition to his son he is predeceased by his brothers Thomas J. McDuff Sr. and Robert J. McDuff, his in-laws, Clarence F. and Florence A. Pepin, and his brother-in-law Richard J. Pepin.

The family would like to express their thanks to all of his caregivers and staff at the Pilgrim Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center for their outstanding compassion and care they gave to Joe.

Service information: His funeral will be held on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 9 a.m. from the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant, at 10 a.m. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nahant.
