PEABODY — John R. Murphy, age 90 and longtime resident of Peabody and Lynn, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody. He was born on October 25, 1926 in Chelmsford, the son of the late, Thomas H. and Annabelle (Looby) Murphy. He was raised and educated in Lynn and attended Lynn English High School. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and served as a Seaman First Class. He was honorably discharged. John worked as a shoe die maker for over 40 years. He had worked for Champion Die in Lynn and later for United Die in Lynn and Danvers. He retired in 1989. As a younger man, John loved to play in softball leagues in the Lynn area. He enjoyed taking trips to Foxwoods and playing cards on Saturday nights with his family. John especially loved spending time with his family at cookouts and birthday celebrations. He is survived by his spouse of 67 years, Elizabeth (Reed) Murphy of Peabody, as well as many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his late brothers; Thomas, Paul and George Murphy, as well as his sister, Ann Green.
Service information: Family and friends are invited to attend Mr. Murphy’s visitation on Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 2–6 p.m. at CUFFE-MCGINN Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, MA 01904. Funeral services will take place on Monday, August 7, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with Navy Honors will follow the service in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
